🌟 Welcome to Reception – Where Learning Comes to Life! 🌟

In Reception, learning is exciting, active and built around children’s natural curiosity about the world. Our EYFS curriculum is carefully planned to give children the best possible start to school, helping them grow in confidence, independence and a love of learning.

Throughout the year, children explore a range of engaging topics such as All About Me, Traditional Tales, Amazing Animals, Come Outside, Ticket to Ride and Fun at the Seaside. These themes spark imagination and help children make sense of the world around them, from families and friendships to animals, places, journeys and the natural environment.

Learning in Reception is play-based and hands-on, with adults carefully guiding, modelling language and extending children’s thinking. Children develop early reading, writing and maths skills through stories, songs, role play, investigation and practical problem solving. They also learn how to share, take turns, manage their feelings and build positive relationships.

Our curriculum covers all seven areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Physical Development

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the World

  • Expressive Arts and Design

🌱 What does learning look like in Reception?

Learning in Reception happens through a balance of child-initiated play and adult-led activities. Children explore carefully planned indoor and outdoor environments where they can investigate, create, practise new skills and follow their own interests. Adults support learning by asking questions, introducing new vocabulary and helping children make connections between ideas.

You might see children building, painting, reading, writing, counting, exploring nature, playing games, solving problems or acting out stories. Every activity is designed to help children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need as they move through the Early Years and into Key Stage 1.

Whether planting seeds, retelling stories, designing vehicles, exploring habitats, creating artwork or sending postcards from imaginary holidays, children are constantly learning, often without even realising it.

Above all, we want our Reception children to feel happy, safe, confident and excited to come to school every day, ready to grow into curious, capable learners.
